Organoids are mini versions of organs grown in the laboratory to mimic organ development and organization. However, current organoids fall short of recapitulating, or mirroring the complexity of human development.
As a 2025 Schmidt Science Fellow, Jonathan will use synthetic development strategies to increase the physiological relevance of organoids for modeling human development and disease more accurately.
Jonathan aims to genetically modify stem cells to enhance organoid vascularization and their subsequent development. He will use this to model human pancreatic development and disease to harness knowledge about these diseases and their potential cures.
Jonathan will pivot from Biomedical Engineering to Developmental Biology
