The gut-brain axis plays a key role in regulating mood, homeostasis – including body temperature – and overall health. Yet, the underlying process remains poorly understood due to limitations in neurotechnology primarily designed for brain study.
As a Schmidt Science Fellow, Yeji will develop noninvasive tools to monitor and control specific neural circuits involved in gut-brain communication. Exploiting advances in gene delivery, Yeji will use functional materials (polymers or nanoparticles) to relay signals between neurons and external devices such as electrodes or imaging systems.
With this platform, Yeji will explore new ways to understand and treat psychiatric, neurological, and metabolic conditions – optimally without the need for surgery or implants.
Yeji will pivot from Materials Science to Virology
