Universities around the world are being invited to participate in the 2027 Interdisciplinary Science Rankings, with the Rankings data submission portal now open.
The 2027 edition of the Interdisciplinary Science Rankings marks the pioneering initiative’s third year.
Powered by Times Higher Education (THE) in association with Schmidt Science Fellows, the Rankings champion the institutions taking action to support boundary-breaking research.
Following a record-setting debut year, the second iteration of the rankings, published in November, saw global participation increase by 22%.
MIT retained the top position in the 2026 Rankings for the second consecutive year, atop a list featuring more than 900 universities from 94 countries.
Institutions can now submit data for the 2027 edition via THE’s data portal.
The Rankings provide a robust analysis of how interdisciplinary science is supported at institutions worldwide, highlight key success factors, and identify emerging trends.

Schmidt Science Fellows Executive Director Megan Kenna said the initiative is catalyzing a global conversation about the future of research.
She added: “The Interdisciplinary Science Rankings highlight how universities are creating the space where new ideas emerge. They show what it takes for researchers to work across fields with the support and flexibility they need to explore the solutions to hard problems that sit at the intersection of disciplines.
“Three years in, we’re seeing a strong global commitment to strengthening the foundation for this work. The insights from the Rankings help leaders understand their progress, share approaches, and shape the environment that makes discovery possible.”
THE’s Chief Global Affairs Officer Phil Baty said: “The Interdisciplinary Science Rankings shine a light on the fabric of collaboration that is powering great science and significant advances.
“It is not a ranking for ranking’s sake, it is about providing rich, global data analysis that can support decision-making on campus, evolving how we support science and generate new and exciting breakthroughs.“

On the day the Rankings are published, THE and Schmidt Science Fellows also host the Interdisciplinary Science Forum, convening global research leaders to share and discuss the latest trends, strategies, and innovations.
Institutions that would like to participate in the ISR 2027 must submit data for the World University Rankings, as well as additional data on their interdisciplinary science, via the same portal.
